How much life insurance do you need?

This page includes a calculator and explains the key components: how many years of income to replace, outstanding debts, education funding, and what you currently have in place.

The standard approach is to sum what your income could have covered and remove amounts already covered elsewhere. Perfect precision isn't necessary, since term policies are sold in round increments anyway. The objective is finding an amount that sustains your household during the years when the need is greatest.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Use this formula as your starting point: (annual income × years) + total debts + education costs − existing coverage, rounded to the nearest $5,000. This is a planning tool only, not professional guidance.

Why those inputs

Income years. A typical planning window spans ten to twenty years, with the specific duration depending on how many years your dependents require financial support. In most cases, households with small children in Oakley lean toward the longer timeframe due to the overlap of expensive childcare, housing, and school costs.

Debts. Mortgages represent the single largest obligation for most households. If survivors could pay off the mortgage from the insurance proceeds, they would retain the option to stay or move rather than being forced into a decision by financial pressure.

Education. Budget a reasonable amount per child based on today's tuition and living expenses. It's simpler to include education costs in your initial policy than to buy additional coverage afterwards.

What you have. Count liquid savings and any group life insurance through your employer. Since group coverage typically ends when employment ends, most people count only a portion of it or exclude it entirely.

Once you have determined your target amount, visit the quote tool to see what each carrier charges for 10 through 30 year options. Many people find the monthly premium difference is minimal when buying coverage above their estimate, especially if they're younger.
